There is an NLP adage that states that “Your communication is only as good as the response you get.” The fact that we know what we mean does not necessarily make us good communicators. Effective communication does not end with the development and use of a large internal lexicon (dictionary) and an understanding of the syntactic rules of language.

The words that we use when speaking to each other only accounts for 7% of any communication, another 38% is made up of other important linguistic dynamics whilst the largest part of communication is non-verbal; accounting for 55% of the total.

In addition, the effective use of metaphor and analogy to enhance one’s communication results in getting the message across, far better than just “talking” to someone.
